Installing a thermostat...

I had gotten a tank with a UTH installed in it (a plug comes out from the tank itself, I don't know if it's removable) but how would I put a thermostat in with that? Do they work together?

I'm kind of a newb at this thermostat thing, my father was the one who maintained temperature control on all our reptiles, heh.

Also, I can't afford a herpstat- that's simply out of the question for now...is there a (much) cheaper, but still reliable thermostat out there I can get?

And how would I tell the temps of his hides?

EDIT: after looking online this is one I found: http://www.bigappleherp.com/BAH-1000-Thermostat#
Is it a good choice? Or is there something better (around the same price) that is better?

I use the Big Apple Herp thermostat. I find that it keeps the temperature within 3 degrees of where I want it, so it works for me. Installation is easy. You plug the heater into the outlet attached to the thermostat (there are three on the BAH one), and plug the thermostat into the wall. The probe should go on the floor in the tank, right on top of the heat source, if it can't go on the heat source directly. Tape it down so it can't move. Set a digital thermometer probe right next to it for accurate temp reading and tape that down as well. Adjust the temperature on the thermostat accordingly and give it about three hours to regulate. That's about all the work you have to do.

If you need more heating source you can plug a power strip into one of the 3 outlets on the thermostat, then plug in more heaters. Just make sure you don't go over the wattage number.
