I'm new to breeding although I did have some success last year, but I'm still rather inexperienced.

My females are starting to ovulate :main_thumbsup: which is great. Tonight I put my Super Snow female (who has already laid infertile eggs despite not being near a male!) in with my male Tremper Mack Snow. He was very keen to mate but she wasn't having it. After she savaged him I took her out immediately. I then tried a proven female, a Hypo Tangerine and she also wasn't having any of it. So my only other girl who is of a breeding weight and then some is Pepper, a normal. She was really placid with him, but he attacked her! Now I was worried she might go for him, shes a big girl (80g) and can be a bit aggressive but she gave it on a plate so to speak :p But the males behavior is something I haven't seen before. He arched right up and was rubbing himself along the walls of the tank like a cat. After a few minutes he lunged at her and attacked her. I know mating can look aggressive but this looked really vicious. Was he scared of my big female? Was I wrong to put 3 girls with him in such a short space of time?

Maybe he was getting frustrated by then. I would suggest you try another night. Also, if the female bites him and then they both back off, it's probably OK to leave them together for awhile to see if they change their minds.

Claire, what you described sounds a lot like a male picking up the scent of a male on a female. I have seen this first hand and what you describe sounds very familiar. Aliza is right wait a couple days before reintroducing the scent should ware off. Hope this helps!
