When you introduce a male to the female, how long do you leave them together?

When is the next time you will introduce the male to the female after the female laid eggs?

I keep my males together with the females for the whole season, from Jan. until about October. The only exception is if I introduce a newly mature female to a male at the end of the season, in which case I probably leave them together for 1-2 nights. I'm usually only expecting 1-3 clutches from her.

1. I introduce mine when I notice ovulation or if they start laying eggs. I place the male in with the female and wait and watch to make sure the deed is done. Then I will introduce them again in a couple of days. My males go right to work, so I only have to wait 5-10 minutes. If the female denies him, I try again in couple of weeks.

2. Females can retain the sperm from just one mating to fertilize her eggs all season. If I am getting "half fertile" clutches I will re-introduce the male. Otherwise they will not meet again until the following season.

Like Brian said, they can retain sprem for an entire season, some do some may need an extra mating.

Some may lay 14 clutches (28 eggs per season) but its not the norm for them to all lay that many, most lay 8-10 clutches per year from my experience. And if they go to 12, I cool them to stop them from laying more so they do not totally wear their little bodies out.
