They do like to hide in order to feel secure, especially when young. Your gecko may choose places that are more interesting if you set up some hiding spots lower down. On the other hand, i find that sometimes a gecko spends a lot of time in one spot and then chooses a different spot to spend its time. My crested gecko used to wrap himself up in the leaves when he was little.
