Irresponsible Pet Owners!!

My niece was outside today and one of my neighbors dogs attacked her. Luckily she was not seriously harmed. I went out to see where the dog was and it chased after me. I was able to get inside my porch and it tried to get through the screen door to get me. It then killed a neighbors cat and attacked another kid one street over. I had to call the cops and animal control. One of the worst things is is the owners saw him attack my niece while they were pulling out and drove away. Luckily I was near and heard her yelling. This dog is well known for his aggressive behavior. Their dogs (they have 5 in all) are always getting out and they do nothing to make sure that they stop getting out. The cops and animal control were looking for a while and I had to go to an appointment so I dont know if they have caught the dog or not. Now I am afriad to go outside or let me dogs out thinking he is still out. Some people should not be pet owners.

I know the feeling! If they can't control 1 dog, they should not have 5 dogs! Ugh! Some people just don't get it. Just because some animals make your heart feel good doesn't mean you should have them. One day when I get a dog, I'll make sure it is well trained. I'm glad my cat could care less about my other animals( he only sniffs them and then turns away).

It is unfortunate that through this persons irresponsibility the dog will likely be put down. I'm glad your niece was not seriously hurt.
Hopefully they will find the dog before it kills someone.

I agree. They abuse their animals and this is the result. We have called the cops on them for animal abuse before (they had two puppies and I observed them swinging them in the air by their leash). All they get is a citation. They did catch the dogs. 2 were out but only one became aggressive. Because neither attack (besides the cat) resulted in serious injury they will observe the animal for 10 days and then they will get their dog back. They will get a citation. Not that I want the dog put down but I don't think they should be able to have their dog back either and give it another chance to hurt someone. The whole incident reminded me of Cujo...

That is horrible! They need to be tougher on people who have dangerous animals and don't keep good control on them. They should take all of their dogs away and give them a period of X number of years where they can not legally own a dog, maybe require some training in proper care as well. It's a danger to society. If someone's dog attacked my kid and they just got a slap on the wrist I'd go after them legally myself in hopes that they get through their thick skull they can't endanger the public like that.

IMO, the dog needs to be putdown. Its an agressive animal and if they wont train it and the state wont then options are limited, he could have easily done worse. I would deffinetly talk to your community and see if a petition cant be organised about the family owning dogs.

They should give the dogs to a no-kill shelter or to a foster family, and prevent the original owners from ever owning dogs again. That way the dogs can be retrained to be nice doggies, no one dies, and the owners are still punished.

I'm sorry for what you went hru with your neice but the cops are idots. You need to contact your local animal enforcement offcer and start a "dangerous dog" proceeding against them. The will HAVE TO build escape proof runs with concrete floors, solid roof, and buried cain link. 2 feet below the ground surface... LAST thing they should do is take a dog with a bite history to ANY shelter aside of Best Friends in Utah. No local shelter or rescue group can or will take a dog with a KNOWN bite history s it is too high of a liability and most aren't equipped to "retrain" a dog of this caliber. I work with aggressive dogs, and have for 16 years. Personally I would have shot the dog as soon as it came on my property, its well within your rights. Check your local consolidated dog laws. You'll see. As far as the owners that "drove way" while they saw their dog attacking your neice are guilty of more than just not properly confining ther dogs, their guilty of a crime called "defrayed indifference" basically looking away when a crime is being committed and doing nothing to help. Your local cops are doing the bare minimum to cover their liability and not totally doing the job that they should. Call animal enforcement, get the police reports and DEMAND a dangerous dog citation/hearing.

So sorry for what you and your niece went through today an attack by a dog is very traumatic.

I am not as nice as you or a lot of the people here. I would have shot the dog, no question about it.

No reputable rescue will take a dog that has a known bite history. Taking it to a no-kill shelter places other people and pets in harms way. It isn't the dogs fault, but rehabing a dog like that isn't something most rescues, shelters or even many people are able to do successfully.

I see you live in Florida also. If the dog actually got a bite on you, your niece or the other child the police have to see a current license and rabies vaccination certificate or the dog should be removed to the ASPCA for a 10 day hold.

Hope you find that the dog has been caught soon!

Lora
