Is a dimmer nessecary?

You should leave the UTH on all the time, but you have to measure and see what temperature the UTH is getting to. In some cages, the floor temperature with the UTH can get to be over 100 and can burn the gecko. The dimmer isn't to turn the UTH up and down; it's to reduce the UTH output so it doesn't get to hot. Sometimes the dimmer has to be adjusted because if the air temperature gets very cold, you may need the UTH to put out more heat.

A UTH is better than a red light, generally, in keeping the floor temperatures warm.

I am starting a new tank, and im using a Rheostat for my UTH. It is used to manage to UTH heat. They are cheaper then a thermostat online. They basically do the same thing as a "dimmer"
