Is it normal?

This incident happened about a month ago but I still can't get the thought out of my mind. I found 2 eggs in the laying box about a month ago. They were laid by one of my tangerine Bells. They both looked good (turgid, whitish etc.). But upon transfering to an incubation medium, one of the eggs cracked when I touched it. Infact, the shell felt like it was as thin as a tracing paper. Trust me when I say that I was being very gentle. The other one was very much normal and it was transferred successfully. She has access to everything including, hide, laying box, calcium, food and water etc. I still incubated the cracked egg though. But after about a week or so, mold started to grow and the "smell" was there. So, I guess it's dead. The other one should be hatching in a few weeks from now.

My question what would have caused an egg to turn as such? Have you experienced such a predicament before?

Thanks in advance.

Some infertile eggs are kind of like "water balloons" from the time they are laid and I imagine that they are prone to breaking. Could that have been what happened?
