there are lots of different kinds of paper...

news paper, papertowel, computer paper, note book paper, construction paper, cardstock....

saying "paper" leaves it broad.

You can use kitchen roll tubes, empty tissue boxes, empty cardboard boxes, empty butter or yogurt containers, cut tupperware containers. There are many easy-to-get things you can use that you don't have to buy. Paper will work I guess, but it is unstable and could cave in on your gecko, or he could move it around and trample it if he's trying to climb on it.
