Is this a good idea?

Hi everybbody! I'm new here at it's great to meet all of you. I recently made a big change to my geckos viv. I took out the papertowel and replaced it with wood paneling, the ones you would use on floors. Now it's not real wood, more like pressed layers of cardboard with some plastic finish. Is it a good idea to keep her on this kind of a substrate? I will be switching to ceramic tile in the near future if that makes a difference. Oh and she's 4 months old and loves the paneling!

Hi there, welcome to the forum :)

I've never heard of using that as a substrate before, but I guess if your leo likes it, and it's safe, then why not!!

I think its fine as long as heat can pass through it, and it doesn't give out harmful gas when warmed.

I think I'd avoid the wood paneling. How does it react to water and gecko droppings? The finish may disolve and be consumed.

Welcome ;)

I'd agree that i would stay away from this paneling.. the finish and lacquer are powerful chemicals and could react negatively with the chemicals in the feces and even the spilled drops of water when they run through their dish, drink and drip, etc..

The compressed cardboard contents could also eventually become porous, and easily house bacterial growth.

i'd lean towards tile and other more solid & untreated substrates even in a viv..
