Is this normal?

So, I have this leopard gecko whom I got from a friend (I had almost all of the materials, but I'm getting a thermostat tomorrow, I know I really need that).

Anyway I've had him for 2 days, he's been eating great (mealworms), he has a moist and warm hide, a calci/food dish and a water dish. He went into his warm hide for 4+ hrs when I woke up this morning but he's been sleeping right outside of it with all of his legs splayed toward his tail, which looks kinda funky to me, or is that natural for them?

If I make any big movement like getting out of my chair (he's near my computer so I can always keep an eye on him) he'll open his eye but go back to closing them...

But why isn't he sleeping in his hide? I have a light on, so it's not dark, but his cage is kind of in a shadow..I can't check the temps until I get the stat tomorrow which makes me anxious, but I touched my finger to several spots in his cage- is there any way to tell with my finger temporarily if the temps are ok?

EDIT: He just started moving toward the side of his glass and all of a sudden jumped and started wagging his tail frantically- he then went into his hide. I wasn't even moving at the time, I was quietly watching him and I have no idea what just happened- there was nothing there. I touched where he was after he hid and the temp was fine, so he didn't get burnt...

Some never come out of their hides, some never go in. Some like to do the "gecko dance" on the side of the tank. It's all normal. If he starts talking with an Australian accent . . . that's not normal.

When I first got my male leo, i had 3 of the 4 sides covered & I believe he used to see his reflection in the glass, so he'd get real low to the ground & wave his tail high in the air. He's do this forever trying to intimidate the "other" gecko. Sometimes he'd strike at the glass, but once i removed the side covers he stopped. Lol
