I know everyone here has visited at least one completely awful LPS.
I have one near me, and I hate going in there! They house all of their animals on wood chips/bark and the snakes are dehydrated and stuck with no hides. :main_no:The last time I went in the was with my mom because she needed some supplies there.

What's interesting to me is the fact that everyone hates that one big chain P*tsm*rt because of the poor care of animals, but the one P*tsm*rt close to me is actually very decent!
The staff is very knowledgeable about the reptiles(one of the employees owns many of her own reptiles and I've compared the information I researched online with what she told me; she knows her stuff) and the animals are well taken care off. A worker once refused to sell a juvenile bearded dragon to a young child because the tip of its tail was detached and wasn't done healing. I might be wrong, but in my eyes I see this as a responsible move.
I've purchased my leopard gecko and bearded dragon from this particular chain store, and I haven't had one problem yet.

I wish the other chain stores were just as decent as this one. Does anyone else have a surprisingly good chain store that they shop at?

The p3t-c0 where i bought spot from used to be DECENT. Spot was in great shape when i bought him and has been thriving since. What irks me is they USED to have decent quality animals there, i dont know what happened but if i am low on feeders (cause im having a slow start with colonizing) and i have to go there now all the animals look on the brink of death! They are all really thin and sickly looking. Giving hatchling/juvies large crickets water with stuff floating in it. ITs sad. I assure you if spot was in the shape the geckos they been getting are in i woulda never bought him. And to get even more upsetting is a local pet store (mom n pop) order super delicate geckos like leaftails and take horrible care of them, and most of the time these animals die before being sold. It is a terrible and sad thing, I really wish that if a pet store or chain wont provide proper care, OR TEACHING to potential owners, they shouldnt have the animals in their inventory.

I keep my one leo flower with me a lot and she travels in my purse just like a chihuahua lol and i have had a mom and pop store offer to give me a breeding contract, but i asked to look at their reptiles they were in HORRIBLE condition. Id rather give off spring away then to send them to their deaths. I know people breed to make money, but i almost wonder if some breeders care about the lives of the offspring they put into the market. We all love the all mighty dollar, but i wish there was more care and thought put into who and where you sell to. I would rather try selling on my own than to whole sale to a shop and have the animals suffer. Just my feelin on this issue.

Just a quick reminder that store names are not allowed (even if they are spelled incorrectly) in complaints.
Posts and threads commenting on any business or individual with regards to their business and/or reptile husbandry ethics are not allowed on GeckoForums.net. This includes complaints about retail pet stores.

There is a chain store I frequent where I live and they are stellar. I bought an anole there once who had an eye infection which he came down with a week or two after purchase. I took him in and they got him treated for me for free and the little fellow lived for many happy and healthy years.

I also recently purchased a beautiful little patternless gecko from the same retailer. The only thing wrong with her is a kinked tail, but she's otherwise a good eater, active, bright eyed and well coloured despite this little kink. In otherwords, she is perfectly healthy! No one had bought her though because she was the biggest in the tank and people want babies, near hatchlings of course. But I'd been eyeing her and watching her grow for two or three months before deciding to get her.

The store asks me about her whenever I stop in for feeders or a replacement lightbulbs. Not only does the staff remember the patron, but they remember the gecko too. There are some chain retailer horror stories, but I can safely say that from this store, I have expereinced only greatness.
