can you keep a young male and a young female in the same cage? what about a young female and an older male? i know the rule for how many can be kept in one, i have a 30 gallon tank that i want to keep two leos in, but i don't know how they should be arranged.

I would only put her in when breeding, just to be safe. Sometimes the males can be a little too anxious, even when the female is not ovulating, and they can both get stressed out.

I keep my males with the females during the whole breeding season, Jan-Nov. Then I separate the males for a few months to get them interested again and re-do the pairings. I have one male, however, that I keep with a female all year around. I do this for several reasons:
--this male, as I've posted elsewhere seems to be calmer with company
--the female, though only 6 years old and an egg-producer for me several years ago does not seem to be ovulating anymore
--the female is very reclusive and spends nearly all her time in her magnet hide. THe male does try to mate with her when she comes out, and for all I know they may have actually mated, but when she's not interested she lets him know and he backs off
--if for some reason they do mate and she does lay eggs, I'm breeding anyway so I'm set up to deal with it.

It should be noted, though, that I had another female in with him that I had to remove because he was pestering her a lot, she wasn't able to fend him off, and she was getting stressed. She is now in with another male and a female. She also does not seem to ovulate, the male either isn't bothering her or she's able to keep him at bay (the other female has laid 8 clutches of fertile eggs).
