Just How Bad Are Waxworms?

I've read that you shouldn't overdo it with the waxworms, because the gecks can get "addicted" to them and refuse to eat everything else. How true is this and how bad are waxworms for the geckos health? I bought some last week (and the lizards love them), but I'm afraid to offer too many. What is a reasonable amount and how often? Are they good for a gravid female? Bob

Think of it like a human eating a snickers bar. The nuts give some protein but the rest is fattening us up. Would you eat 10 snickers bars in a day? No, maybe one or two a week wouldn't kill us though :p

Example: Let's say you had a child that ate nothing but fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean meats all it's life. Then, your child spent the night at someone's house for the first time, and got taken to Baskin Robins for a triple fudge sundae. Now the child will not eat anything except ice cream. For ever. LOL!

Well, I don't feed them at all and imo it's best to avoid them if possible. Those were great examples above:main_laugh:

There really is no reason to feed waxworms. Even if I have picky eaters, I will offer other types of worms with less fat content in them. Gravid females should not be offered a more fatty diet, but like in humans, you want a healthy balanced diet. People tend to over supplement and engorge their females when gravid. I wouldn't feed them more than a couple a week if that though.

Oh there's all sorts of insects you could feed to your geckos that are both very healthy and very attractive to your pet. Hornworms are a good example. The Hornworms we carry at Small Pet Feeders are fed a wheat-based diet that brings out an attractive Teal color in the worms that reptiles love, and they're high in moisture and calcium. Silkworms are another good option, high in calcium and very delicious to reptiles.

Roaches!! Those are always a great staple feeder for geckos and other reptiles. The best thing about roaches is they breed themselves after buying a quantity suitable for a starter colony. They are also a lot meatier than crickets or superworms, and are very attractive when scurrying around your geckos cage. They can be gutloaded on the same materials as crickets as well. Roaches can feed all sizes of reptiles, as you can feed off both adults and babies to your geckos :)

If you have hatchlings, Fruit Fly cultures are a good option for readily available food.

If I can help you place an order on the site, please don't hesitate to get ahold of me either through Gecko Forums, or on SmallPetFeeders.com. Take care and Happy Holidays.

Welcome to the forums, small pet feeders! I have only given my leos 1 wax worm so far. They seemed to enjoy them, however, I will only give them one every two months.
