Well, I'll say this Jason...

We are opening up a sports bar. Now, it is illegal to smoke in business in Oregon. We built a nice gazebo out the back door of our building 50 feet away from the exit (that's the least distance it can be from an open door). It is covered, with chairs, and out of the weather. I may not agree with smokers in the least, but I understand there are a lot of smokers out there, and they are a good part of my business. Accommodating them as best I can is in my best interest. I can't go as far as making a room lol, but that would be nice.

And more than me being mad at the individual who is smoking for hurting me (physically) I'm more mad at them hurting themselves. It pains me to see someone being so self-destructive. You say you know how bad it is for you and yet you do it anyway? If I think about it too much it makes my vision go red. I hate the whole cultural monster that makes it acceptable. I love that it is harder and harder for smokers to smoke- not just because it means I can enjoy myself when I go out (though that is certainly a great thing), but because maybe more and more people will be able to quit if it becomes more worthwhile to do so.

I do it for the same reason people eat at Burger King, KFC and all those others places.....i enjoy it. You may not see that as a reason, but to each is own. I for one believe in enjoying life & not constantly watching every little thing i do. I would rather die at a younger age knowing i enjoyed myself as much as possible than to live to be 100 just to regret never really living, but that's my opinion. Making it harder for smokers to smoke isn't necessarily going to stop them from smoking.....as I tell my friends as i stand out in the freezing cold, "Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow will stop me from inhaling some nicotine".

I really don't understand why you care so much, if you don't like it that's fine but there's no reason to get so huffy about it. It's our choice, not yours....don't be so concerned about others actions. Also, if you're going to get mad at people for doing stuff that will kill them then you need to be mad at pretty much everyone b/c just about everything can shorten your lifespan to some degree. Only way to avoid that is to sit in a germ-free environment your whole life eating nothing but oatmeal & vegetables, I for one would rather die than do that.

LOL @ the dark alley. One of my jobs is at a club, during the evening. and they make all of us go way in the back. into this little secluded area almost complety inclosed by brick walling, to go smoke! while the customers, are complety fine to go out the front door. and stand in the from of the building and smoke.. :main_angry: it really makes me mad.. and yea there are cameras outsite. but i won't go out to smoke by myself though

and my best friend has lung cancer. and has already had two surgeries, and several different procedures. to try to treat her. but she has never smoked.. her husband doesn't smoke. her parents never smoked :main_huh:
so what does she tell me.. oh yea that i need to quit smoking, unless i want to end up like her... (Now i smoke black & milds, if anyone doesn't know what they are.. they're cigars. the thins ones. and have a plastic tip. no filter at all.and are probably so much more worse for me that a cigarette) and my reply to her is.. you got it and don't even some..... so if i am going to get lung cancer...I am going to have it for a legitimet reason, & i am going to enjoy myself untill/if the day come that I do :)

but yea, Jason, the biggest, bossiest person in my life is my (almost) 7yr old son. :main_laugh: (who i don't smoke around, but when i come inside the house he can smell it) other than that, thankfully I don't have to many people telling me anything, thankfully :)

That would annoy the hell out of me. I agree, smoking alone sucks. I've always figured i'm going to die from some dumbass thing i've done not related to tobacco but more in the range of some stupid idea I get. I've already been wanting to go venomous snake collecting in the summer....so it's only a matter of time I suppose.

That's all we ask, just don't stick us some place where you get the feeling you're going to get mugged everytime you go outside.

I agree. I'm a smoker and nothing bothers me more than to hear "You know that's bad for you, right?" Yes, thank you, I know...now please go away so I can enjoy my cigarette. I'm sure that same person wouldn't be too pleased if you ran up to them at McDonalds and asked if they knew grease drenched burgers weren't good for them. I'm also a polite smoker and respect non smokers

I smoked for 10 years, quit for 10 years, and started smoking again. I smoked for another 12 years, then quit for 6 years, and started smoking again. That is how addictive cigarettes are! When I smoked, I was a very considerate smoker and never smoked in the house, in the car, or around non-smokers... especially children. In the State of California, smoking is almost a crime now. The city of Los Gatos has made it illegal to smoke within the city limits with the exception of your own home. The city of Santa Cruz will not allow smoking ins ANY public place... including the beach!

People who smoke know it is dangerous to their health, and the others around them. Smokers also know it is a disgusting habit that is offensive to non-smokers. Personally, I don't like smelling other people's smoke, and I hate seeing cigarette butts all over sidewalks and store entrances. I hate it when smokers throw their cigarettes out of their car windows on the roads (California burns very easily!), and can fined a lot of money for doing that. Basically, cigarette smoking is almost a criminal offense in my State.

But, I think those who smoke have every right to do so as long as the personal rights of non-smokers are not violated. Cigarretes are just as addicting as crack, and the dependency on cigarettes is so great in some smokers that they simply cannot quit. The fact that I was stupid enough to think I could have 'just one cigarette" after being smoke-free for over 10 years and becoming addicted again is a perfect case in point. Just like any other addiction, you can't have 'just one'.

My husband is 57 years old, and is a 2-3 pack a day smoker. He's been smoking for over 40 years, and it scares the crap out of me. Nagging him or guilting him into quitting is fruitless. When we started smoking back in the 60's everyone smoked, and we truly didn't know of the health risks involved with it. Today, anyone that starts smoking knowing full well what the ramifications are, is a moron.

The war should really not be with the smokers themselves, because it is futile for the majority of those who do. It should be with the tobacco companies that deceived the public with bogus studies regarding the addictive qualities of smoking as well as the devastating health risks. There should be more successful and FREE programs available for smokers to quit, including support afterwards for those who do quit. Treating smokers like criminals is certainly not the answer!
