Keeping Mealies

We had been buying meal worms from petstores, but recently I placed an order with http://www.mealwormsbythepound.com/Live-Mealworms_c10.htm Our mealies arrived yesterday and I was thrilled...we only found like 5 dead meal worms out of 2000. They are also fatter and healthier looking than the ones from the pet store. Anyway, I kind of assumed they'd come in tupperware containers like from the pet store, but they were just in bags...so how do I keep them?? We separated the sizes into appropriate size containers and I put oatmeal in with them and put them in the fridge...we are only feeding some aquatic turtles and my 3 LGs...so how long will the mealies last as long as they are in the fridge?? Thanks for answering my questions.

Storing mealworms: I use a faunarium which is a plastic container with a plastic, ventilated cover. The one I use is about 12"x8"x10" (height). I can keep 5000-10000 mealworms in there. I buy gutload from www.progeckos.com and keep them buried in there. I usually don't keep mealworms in the fridge because I haven't liked the results --maybe my fridge is a bit too cold. If you do keep mealies in the fridge, take them out every week for 24 hours to warm up and eat.

Thanks I think I will place an order for that gutload today. :) I have another question...I just assumed they were kept in the fridge...but if you don't want to keep them in the fridge how long will it take for them to grow up into beetles??

You ask to hold one... if it avoids it and succuries away or bites him then don't hold that one.
Just wanted to add... but also if it seems really sleepy and doesn't move much when the pet store man touches it, it might be sick. You are looking for one that cares it's being touched, but isn't scared or mean when it is.

Back to mealies: the warmer it is, the faster they develop. I can't give you any exact time frames, but if you're getting a lot of mealies and only have a few geckos, buy them small and keep them cool (that should get easier as the fall comes) .

I've just begun my colony about a week and a half ago, and a few days ago I saw my first beetle. I have several pupas in a tupperware as well. Once you have beetles the general timeframe for them to breed is 3 months or so, but as was said it depends on your temps. My house is perpetually 80-84.
