Keeping Mealworms

Hey.. new to this site, but definately not new to forums, so I have tried to search for my answer, but I have not come up with anything...

So I purchased my first 2 leopard geckos this weekend, after months of trying to convincing my girlfriend... She kept saying that she didnt like crawly things, so she didnt want a lizard in the house. So I took her to the pet shop and showed her a beautiful Blizzard, and she fell in love.. (dont worry, I didnt buy the Blizzard at the pet shop) I contacted a local breeder and purchased a little Blizzard and a little SHTCTB..

Anyways, on to my question.. I ordered 500 mealies from a local source, and have read up on keeping them. Wheat, carrots, fridge etc. I understand all of that. I just wanted to know, how much room does 500 mealworms take up? What size container do I need? because I will have to pick one up before I get back home.

Thanks,

Chris

When I used to buy 500 at a time, I simply put them in those chinese plastic rectangular containers with a hole in the middle and a screen glued to it to prevent escapees. 500 mealworms don't take up a lot of space at all. For that matter, any size gladware around 4x6 or bigger (preferably a little bigger) will be ok.

I use the medium faunarium --plastic container about 12"x6"x4" (high) with ventilated plastic top. I keep them in gutload. Currently I have at least 3000 in there from my mealworm breeding project.

My guys in the fridge are in a butter container with holes around the top rim & lid. Don't forget to take them out now & then to warm up & eat. My breeders are in a gallon fish tank with no lid under the leo house. I bought 1000 last April & have been growing enough to feed my 2 since then.

You don't even really need to bring them out to eat. I've lost mealies in the fridge for months and (I think) one time for years and most were still edible. About ~3-5% were dead, though. Just don't freeze them- then they all die.

Any of the Gladware will work fine.

We get 20K every other week and we keep them in a two sepearate gladware type containers that I've soldered holes around the rim and the lid itself. They work great and are easy to clean. I think they were called take-a-alongs or something..
