Every summer I get invaded by large ants that make themselves at home in the cat food bowl and the cricket cage. I tried putting the tank in a tub of water but that didn't work. I finally found the solution: using spray-oil around the outside edges of the cricket cage. It doesn't look great but it works.

Great tip!
I've also heard that Borax (laundry aisle) works, or for a harmless remedy, supposedly baby powder works. My dad traveled several years in an RV and he used the baby powder around the tires, hoses, etc while at a campground. Anywhere an ant could travel up and in an RV. He said it works... the ants refuse to touch baby powder! I haven't tried it myself, but he swore by it.

what about cucumber peelings i know when i was younger we put it around the kitchen counter to keep ants away and it seemd to work fine so i cant see why it wouldnt work if you placed them around you cricket bin

I would stay away from borax. When I lived in college-type houses and we had roaches all the time (not the feeder type) we would put boric acid around the edges of the walls. The powder would get on the roaches' feet and when they ingested it they would get dried out and die. Great for the ants, but not for the crickets in case some gets in there. Cucumber peelings and baby powder sound interesting but more messy than oil.
