So after 2 hours there and back plus 3 hours at the show, I come home to this.

reptileshowtl9.jpg

She's getting too big for the crate. And hates it, if you can't tell. That's not where we left it. I had it cati-cornered.

I'm just glad we moved the wires and the crested gecko cage that was sitting on top of it. She had a rough day.

Just out of concern, please don't leave collars on her when she's in the crate. I have seen too many pets die from getting caught by it in the crate and choke to death or get seriouly injured. It's not a pleasant scenario for anyone to go through.

She looks so sad....She is probably thinking, Mom get me outta here I am too big for this stupid thing. And I'll be a good girl if you leave me out.

Please don't tell me that dog was in that cage for 5 hours??

WHY???

Maybe I'm dense-but I just do not understand how anyone could do that

If you are going to crate her-Please get her a large enough crate to be comfortable in

just my 2 cents........

I do agree that the crate is too small. Yes. I know that.

But, I won't be chastised for leaving her in there for 5 hours. It's not like she's an 8 week old puppy who can't hold it. Some people work, leaving dogs in crates for 8-9 hours a day 5 days a week, and can't get away to let them out.

We couldn't find a sitter for her, so she had to go in the crate. I have plans on purchasing a bigger crate for her, but right now it's not a concern, honestly. She's in the crate maybe once a week or so, she knows the crate but hates being away from me. She has separation anxiety, which is another reason we have not purchased a bigger crate. We have another dog who has severe separation anxiety, and has destroyed crates that were sized appropriate with room to spare.

I've done years of research, studying, and training with dogs. I've shadowed trainers for over a year, gone through classes, wrote papers, spent, litterally, thousands of hours training and voluteering with dogs, so I know the rules believe me, but things come up, and time runs out.

Yes, I am aware of the concerns of dogs in crates with collars or harnesses, I've helped out at the sallon in pet stores, which is the #1 rule. But, I forgot, this day. We were leaving in a rush.

I feel awkward being shamed for my dog and her treatment, so to speak... Definately not the reaction I expected, as it's never happened to me ever in regards to any of my animals, much less dogs...

wow reminds me of my pit bull... They are famous for their escape techniques. My pit can open doors (with door nobs). wiggle out of the tightest harness and can open the locks on his crate from the inside... Still havent figured out how he does this. BTW his nickname is houdini.

I am with you on this one Whitney, I think the punishment was a little harsh, and unexpected. I don't think 5 hours was bad at all, the color being left on was bad, but sometimes things are forgotten, and that is totally understandable. Seperation anxiety dogs, and dogs who are not housebroken need to be kenneled while you are not there (for reasonable amounts of time). With the age of Whitneys dog, it had no problem "holding it" for 5 hours, and with the seperation anxiety, that was the only option. I think we jumped to conclusions a bit and I do know Whitney knows quite a bit about dogs from her time working with them and wouldn't do anything to harm her dog, which she worked awhile on parents to be able to get, if I remember right.

I dont think that the comment was about the collar or having to hold it for 5 hours nearly as much as her possibly not even being able to turn around or completely lay down in the cage for 5 hours. I mean I personally could careless, we leave SoCo in the cage anytime we go anywhere for more than 5 mintues and she is fine for up to 6-7 hours at a time (she can hold it overnight when she sleeps in the bed with us so she can do the same in the cage when we are at work too!)...however my Socos crate is alot bigger and can lay down and spread out very comfortably.

To answer the question "WHY???". Some puppies are more "destructive" when they get bored, or when they get pissed that you left them than others. SoCo will tear apart every shoe of Mikey's and only Mikey's shoes when we leave the house or lock her out of our room for more than a few minutes. Personally I do not think that leaving her out of the cage and encouraging this type of behavior (and it gets very costly lol) is worth the chance. However Socos crate is alot bigger and she can lay down and spread out very comfortably and gets lots of toys while in it. Eventually, hopefully she can prove to us that she will not be destructive when we leave her out of the kennel. Believe me it will make me feel alot better leaving the house.

I dont want to be chastized either by no means...I was just trying to show both sides of the argument. I used to be completely against kenneling until I learned that it was the best thing to do for our particular situation. It works for some people who truly need it and if your puppy doesn't need a cage like JD when he was a pup than you may not understand like the others. I hope this helps to clear up some of the questions. And please do not chastize me for this post.
