I'm using perilite/peatmoss mix right now and it doesn't hold humidity good at all for me, I mist it once a day sometimes twice and it keeps drying out. I seen some flurkers moss at the pet store last night is that stuff any good?

I don't know about the Flukers stuff, but I've been using sphagnum moss (the longer fiber type) and am pretty happy with it. It holds humidity better than coco fiber or peat moss, and isn't as messy.

I use a mixture of peat moss and vermiculite. I think the combination of them holds moisture better than each one separate.

Paul, where are you getting the Long Fiber Sphagnum moss form? I was using it for a while and loved it! I got it from my local Feed & Grain store, but they switched to this green colored type and I can't use it because my Geckos actually were eating it, which isn't good, must have had something to do with the coloring.

Now, I can't find the regular long fiber type anywhere. :main_no:

I get it at a garden supply / nursery store in small-ish sized bags. I had tried ordering a big bag online once from http://homeharvest.com/soilconditionerspeat.htm because it appeared to be the same brand, but it wasn't as high quality and actually started molding a few times.

If I send you some money, could you get me some from that store and ship it to me :)

Mandi, I will check out the Lowe's near me too!

I use peat, but am sick of it drying out so fast. I'm switching to the long fiber sphagnum this season.

EDIT: Found this link and they have 1000 gram compressed blocks of "5-star moss (the highest quality in sphagnum moss)" for a pretty good price. However, does it normally come compressed like that?

EDIT EDIT: This place says this about their moss, "There is just no better Sphagnum Moss than this!". It's a little bit more than the above link, but doesn't seem as compressed. Hmmm... What do you say Paul?

It's good I checked in here before running errands because I have to pick some up anyway. I'll grab a few extra bags, but you're not obligated in any way... I'd use it eventually.

Michael, those look like decent alternatives, but I'd really have to try it out to give it much of an opinion. I've had some stuff that smells like formaldehyde when it gets wet, other stuff that's incredibly dusty, etc. I might try it out at some point if needed, but right now I'm going to stick with what I know works for me. Thanks for the links though!

I'm gonna try out the New Zealand stuff. I'll report back here when I get it.

Long Fiber Spag Moss is the best! It's clean, stays moist, and it doesn't stick to eggs

Paul,

Just let me know how much I owe you and I will paypal it to you! Don't forget to add in shipping cost :)

I got the long fiber sphagnum moss at a gardening store near me. It was more $ than the regular sphagnum or peat moss, but it looks like it will be much neater than the vermiculite I was using for the last few years. They sold it in smaller bags as Paul said.

I've used Peat Moss for years and haven't had any issues with it drying out too quickly. I mist it every third day or so , or as I see it drying out, and make sure that I mix all the peatmoss and water together. You just don't need it dripping wet. I may pick up some of the longer-fiber just to give it a go, but I'm pretty satisfied with the Peat moss..
