hey guys i was thinking of building a leo playground. anyone ever done this before? i was thinking i could build a setup that would go on the floor to allow my geckos to run around but have a perimeter that keeps them from escaping. like a prison outside of a prison lol. post your picks if you have em id like to see them. i think it would be cool to get them out of my tanks sometimes and not have to keep a eye on them so much. like a 3' x 6' or something.

Ya know I was thinking of buying one of those kiddie pool or a small sand box (sans sand of course) Another thing that popped into my head was hamster tubes with heat cable wraped arond it ;)

In my old apartment the bathroom was completely sealed, so I would grab a book and let the rats out to explore, they would go for quite a while on curiosity without needing much supervision. So sometimes a room itself could be the playground, if it's thoroughly checked for dangers beforehand.

Otherwise, the pool idea is pretty cool, too.

I think the leos will do the same in the play area as they would in their enclosure, they would just find a place to hide.
Plus i think it unneeded stress on the gecko.
I would just let them be in their cage, where they are use to their surroundings and comfortable.

maybe, but i am awake nights and so are they. they hide during the day allot but are quite curious and roam allot at night. i just think that animals need excersise sometimes and the tanks dont offer much of a stomping ground if ya know what i mean. im sure once they adapted to the playground they would feel less stressed. could be a place to set the other geckos in while i feed each gecko in the tanks as well. just a brain fart...

I don't find so much of an issue with stress. I just think that if I could put my geckos in an enclosed area that was 30 feet wide, they'd immediatly go to the edge of the enclosure and try to get out. That said, I think it could be a cool idea. Maybe one of your geckos would be curious.l

restarting this thread

Scottd, did you ever decide to make a "leo playground"?

I have one of my geckos that LOVES to be out and explore. He makes me feel guilty every night if I don't take him out. But he likes to GO. If I don't walk around with him, he will start walking around on me & looking for places to go. I am nervous of letting him down anywhere and him getting hurt.

I saw this thread and thought it was a great idea - wanted to know what you came up with. Funny, the other 4 leos could care less about exploring. When I do take them out, they are content to just hang out.

im gonna build one to go on my patio. I was just gonna get a huge plastic bin and set up really good. I have some big rocks that i want to put in there and I was thinkin of using astroturf or something. It would be durring the summer that they could go in it but i love be outdoors durring the summer so I figured that when i go out there to read or something ill just let them play.

To sterelize the rocks I just put them all the the backtub and filled the tub up with SUPER HOT water and let them sit in there for an hour or so. Then i rinsed them in hot water and laid them out on a clean towel in the sun to dry.

We are in the process of building an "exercise" tank for our leos we house them in rack systems. So figured they need to stretch their feet a few time a week. we are building a naturalistic enclosure in a 55 gallon tank with lots of different surfaces and things to climb on. too big of an open space might be overwhelming for them and the may just try to hide.

I like these ideas. I would love to hear more opinions on this. Does anyone else feel their geckos need "exercise" after being in their rack tubs? And how do you go about it?

Like I said, I have one "explorer" type. The rest probably don't care & might get stressed by it but I do think they need regular handling for socialization & exercise. Thoughts anyone??
