Leo with eye problems and probable mouth rot

My oldest leo Reggie has not been in good shape recently. She recently lost an eye as a result of a bad shed and was part of the focus of a vet visit earlier this summer. She had been not eating well and this was also a focus.

The vet just gave me Baytril and an anti-inflammatory/pain killer for a spot on her mouth. After a little of this treatment, Reggie started eating small crickets again.

I had thought Reggie was turning the corner and stopped with the Baytril and the pain killer (this turned out to be a mistake).

Now her other eye is swollen shut and it looks like she has mouth rot. She is also not eating well and seems to be in obvious pain from the sore on the right side of her mouth.

My girlfriend and I are taking Reggie to the vet again tomorrow, but we're very weary of what this vet will tell us. She didn't seem very knowledgeable about geckos the first two occasions we took Reggie in, so we have a plan of what we'd like to do for her in the event of a dud of a vet examination.

For the swollen eye, we're looking at getting Peroxide, an ointment (hopefully from the vet), and eye drops (based on several threads I've seen here on GF). We will probably also pick up the materials to make the slurry posted here.

We decided to get Reggie started off on her intensive care tonight and I've made sure to clean up her tank (20 gallon long) and give her fresh paper towels. I will be changing these as often as I can and any time I see that Reggie has pooped. I gave her a dose of baytril and the pain killer tonight and we've soaked her to get fluids in her. We mixed up some stage 1 baby food with water to try to get some more nutrients in her.

If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know. I'll get some pics in a day or two when she doesn't have such a rough day (like tonight or tomorrow).

My girlfriend and I made a pact to get her better and I just wanted to make sure I could get any opinions here that I could as well.

HI guys,
First off I want to say GOOD FOR YOU, for taking such great care of your friend, many wouldn't have gone to those lengths.
How old is Reggie?
baytril is NOT a pain killer, did the vet give you something else for the pain>?
Also, I KNOW that baytril is VERY taxing on the kidneys of mammals, esp when on a prolonged regimen. I can't say for reptiles tho.

maybe some anbesol or oragel for the mouth pain, OR clove oil is a natural antiseptic AND pain reliever, as well as MANY other herbs....

BUT I AM NOT A VET, please PLEASE check with him/her first before you use these products!

Also maybe adding a reptile electrolite to her soaks? I think most big box pet stores sell a product to re-hydrate reptiles.

Reiki is VERY good for all living creatures, it's very easy to learn or find some one who can do it, in fact ALOT of vets know of people who do specifically animals.

Good luck, and please keep us posted!

blessings, Danielle

I'm sad to report that Reggie didn't make it through Wednesday. I took her to the vet Wednesday morning, got some fresh antibiotics and anti-inflammatory, an eye ointment, and a can of a/d dog food for the slurry recipe. That afternoon, Reggie didn't take the slurry so well and she was barely moving, and she passed 10-15 minutes later.

She was between 2-3 years old and went before her time, but I try to take some solace in that she is at peace now.

I'm so sorry you lost Reggie. At least you know you did all you could for her. And, yes, I agree that you can take comfort in that she is at peace now with no pain.
