Leopard Gecko Enclosure??

Does the lid on a gecko inclosure need to fit really tight?? Here is the situation. I have a 50 gallon aquaruim that has a piece plexi-glass now for a lid, w/ the area for the filters (was used for fish) and where the hoses came out cut out of it. I don't have any plants or decorations that are more than 1/2 way up the side of the cage (or that tall even in the middle of the cage) so I'm wondering if I need to buy a screened cover or if the plexi-glass one will be okay??? Are they great escapers?? (I have no issues buying a screen one and know right where to get one from, but just thought I'd ask before I shell out the money. :)

they can be, but most of the time there not. I had a 40 gallon tank I kept 2 of my leos in and it had a 1" gap and one day I walked in my room and saw my leo just sitting on top of her cage! I had a heartattack! so since then I've always had tight lids!

Mine has never gotten out even though I have things that go close to the top of the tank, but I have cats that need to be kept out. I also came home one day to find my screen hanging in the tank and the lid all bent out of shape.... damn cats!

I actually did end up getting a screen. I couldn't get a UTH big enough for my 50 gal (they were sold out) so I had to go w/ a light (got the dark one so hoping it'll be okay) so had to get a screen because the plexi-glass wouldn't work w/ it.

i had a friend who had a 30 gallon aqurium lid and those same holes, and no plants, and somehow, the gecko climbed out and has been gone ever since
