Leos sharing tanks

I just bought my first geck December 2, 2006. I don't know exactly how old he is (from Petco) but he is only 3 grams and just about 3 inches, so I am guessing just a few weeks old. I was wondering at what age is he too old to introduce another leo into the same tank? The only other problem is my vet only THINKS it is a male, so I would need to make sure of the sex of the second before buying.

Leos are generally quite accepting of new tankmates, provided that the tank is big enough and there are adequate hides, warm spots, food, etc. A few things to consider before introducing leos are:

Size - Are they about the same size? A larger leo may eat or attack a smaller leo, so make sure they are about the same size as one another.

Sex - No males with males, because they will fight, but I personally think it is best to keep males and females separate as well. Males tend to harass females to the point that they may attack one another in frustration. I have heard of many cases where a leo has killed or maimed a cagemate of the opposite sex. Your best bet would be to keep girls with girls, and give the boys a cozy bachelor pad. Or, a cage with a divider, like the Visionarium, is a nice option.

Quarantine - Has the new addition been quarantined for at least 60 days? This is very important, as you don't want your established leo getting sick.

Personality - I have a very vocal and bossy female that recently attacked her cagemate of 6 years. I heard them fighting late one night and when I looked in the cage, there was blood everywhere. The victim is okay, but I had to separate them after all this time. I am still confused as to why this happened, but the attacker has always been a dominant gecko. Just keep an eye out for bossy females.

With all that said, you really shouldn't have any problems. Hope this helps and good luck! :)

Never put 2 males together, if their about the same size it should be fine but be prepared to seperate them if something goes wrong, good luck :).

Yep, keep those males apart (you know us guys!) but otherwise they are typically pretty accepting of tankmates!

If your gecko is only a few weeks old, there's no way to know for sure that he's a male. The earliest age you might be able to tell is about 3 months, give or take.

As for keeping tankmates together, I say no problem, as long as they're both females. I have two 11-month old females that I introduced to eachother when they were about 3 months old. I got the first one from a Petco and had her alone for 2 months, then added the second one. They've gotten along fine.

Not all females will get along with each other; you still need to keep an close eye on them to make sure they can live together. I happen to have a female that'll bite any living thing in her tank...
