I had a real problem with my leos eating the moss in their humid
hides.
I tried wrapping it in cloth and paper towels, but they still managed
to dig out the moss, eat some, and make a big mess!
While going through some old boxes of junk, I discovered some cloth
draw-string coffee bags that are about 4 x 7'' and got a brainstorm.
I put a bunch of moss in a mixing bowl and wet it.
Then I stuffed the bags with the damp moss and tied it closed.
It works very well, and holds moisture about 3 days. I just spray the
bag with a little water.
And the bags are a loose weave cloth so the humidity goes through
it really well and they are easy to hand wash.
Ha! another problem solved! :main_thumbsup:

Good idea! I didn't realize leos would eat moss though. I've never noticed Tiamat eating the moss in her hide - I think I'd notice some in her droppings if she did.

Yep, mine eat it! i think it's by accident when they are in there chewing
off shed skin.
One of my males once ate a bunch of it and had a tough time passing
it. Yes, LOL!! you would DEFINITELY know if they ate some!!
I had to pull a long string of it out of Slinky's vent because he couldn't pass
it, and was walking around with this string coming out of him butt! :main_rolleyes:

I have seen the exact same thing in one of my female! She had such a hard time passing the long strand of sphagnum moss that she screeched! I also helped her by slowly pulling it out from her vent. I use coir now.

Oh goodness. Long strings passing through the GI (aka "linear foreign bodies") can be really really bad...! At least in dogs and cats that's true. It basically makes their intestines into a big scrunchy (like the hair tie) and then cuts into the intestine. :(

Your bag solution sounds like a really good one, though.

Right! I have new respect for the kinds of things that can pass through
a lizard!!
He did pass 2 coiled balls ofthe moss on seperate days, on the 3rd day
is when I had to pull it out of him.
All total, it was several inches of moss.
At least it was very soft moss, still, for a while, I thought I was going
to loose a gecko.
