Licking his -----!

I was putting the reps to bed last night. Lights off on that one, heat on that one, feed this one, take out uneaten food for this one, so on.

I noticed the gecko, 9 months old on Feb 1, was trying to turn his body so he can lick himself. One rear leg up in the air, stretching tongue, trying to lick something. I thought aww, he has a mealie attached to him. But it wasn't a mealie! It was his "dangler"! He was licking himself - there!

That was the first time I have seen a reptile's private parts let alone seeing on licking himself. Why was he doing that? For pleasure, was it itchy, hurt, did he think it was a mealie? LOL. I am just wondering if this is ok.

Is there a female inside the tank with him? I know males 'clean up' after mating but I haven't heard of them doing this without mating.

I have a female and she licks herself too.
Probably just keeping themselves clean.

We have a male that seems to do this all the time. He has no female in the tank so I assumed it was for hygene reasons.

Same here, Marly does it almost once a day. I think its good that he cleans himself so he won't have sperm plug! ;)

Maybe Herman is a boy after all. I saw him/her doing this last night. I didn't see much of a "dangler" though. At six months would he have one?
