I know geckos are nocturnal but is it ok to have a light in your tank that is on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours to determine day and night?

You can do that, though I would only reccomend that for if your keeping live plants in the tank that need the light, because your gecko is much less likely to come out during the day if there is a light over the cage.

I use a light that cycles on a timer, however mine doesn't hide during the day, she likes to pass out on the open floor in front of her warm and moist hide right under the light. Either there or she'll sleep in her clear moist hide.

i have a red heat light that i only use in the winter b.c my uth's dont get it warm enough. its not on a timer or anything, i just turn it on/off as needed. my room gets plenty of natural sunlight from 2 windows so they get the normal day/night cycle from that :)
