That's what I do as well. My surface floor temp on the cool side is around 77 and on the warm side is around 93.

So would the temps read by the gun would be close to the temps read by a probe located on the floor?

Yes, the temp gun is going to read your surface floor temps. Not your ambient air temps. I love the temp gun because you get great basking spot readings for all your herps. You can even read the body temp of your herp as well. IMO, a temp gun is the most accurate measurement of temps. Though you do want to account for up to 2 degree difference. I have a PE2 temp gun and a zoo med temp gun. The zoo med always reads 2 degrees higher than the PE2. I kind of trust the PE2 more though.

I have a zoo med one as well, I always try to keep it a 92 that way if I am off 2 degrees either way, I'm still ok.

I originally had a PE1 which I liked a lot. I then got the Zoo Med. I wanted a backup one so I ordered the PE2 about a month ago. I like it so much better. It is easier to hold and easier to work with. Plus, the PE2 takes AA batteries which I tend to have around the house. The Zoo Med takes those little round batteries (I don't know what they're called) which I do not have sitting around the house.

I have been thinking about getting another one just to double check my readings.

Hey I found it strange that your UTH can only keep your substrate to 65-70F without a light. The climate in my region is similar to yours and I've had to no problems getting my temps up to 92F and I'm using an 8x8 Exo Terra. Are you sure your UTH isn't faulty or maybe your substrate is too thick for the heat to go through.

I use a 25 moonlight at nighttime only because the enclosure is on the opposite side furthest away from the window. Also makes it easy for me to peek in once in a while to see what they're up to.
