Lookin' for a lizard

I am really considering getting a lizard, but I'm generally a super picky person, so I need some help from other people with a bit more know-how. I'm looking for something that:

1: is about a foot long
2: can be frequently handled, not too skittish
3: can be housed in a relatively small tank, 40 gallon tops
4: Not required at all, but maybe something with a bit of color!

I was thinking of a rankin's dragon, but there HAS to be something a little less rare and well, pricey.

Welcome to GF. Here are a few suggestions that may meet your needs, though they're a bit off on the size:
Bearded dragon: yes, more like 2 feet long, but they meet all other criteria. I do think 40 gallon is the minimum size for an adult. I have mine in a 36x18x18 Exo-terra and he gets out of the cage time every morning and more on weekends. Some of the morphs are quite nicely colored and you can often find nice looking ones on craigslist

the tried and true leopard gecko: a bit smaller than your ideal, usually 8-9 inches. Very colorful and eay to handle and care for.

There is also the blue tongued skink. Another that is a bit larger. In the 1.5 to 2 foot range. But minimum enclosure size is a 40 breeder and they are very handlable.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but none of those quite fall into the size range I was looking for.
