So I was on another forum (can't think of the name) that I found by random chance; and some guy said he had a full grown ALL black leo with red eyes

I called TOTAL BS on that one

His camera conveniently "broke" so he can't take pics

Is that even possible??

the black gecko morph was supposedly lost accidentally by RT as he states in his book. I seriously doubt some random guy found the gene and created the morph. Especially with red yes.. that sounds like crap. I'd want to see pics..

Actually, there could be a way to make a black leo with red eyes. Look at this gecko: http://www.artlinksgeckos.com/foton/breeders/blackie.jpg

First, that darkness of hers should be proven to be a genetic trait, since for now she is the only one of her kind.

If it was proven to be heritable, then some work on line-breeding black velvets should be made to add some more spots and darkness until some real black geckos were hatched.

Then it should be crossed with albino and enigma genes. Albino to make a red eyed gecko and enigma so the color in the body remained black instead of turning brown from the albinism.

I'm not saying that the guy in those forums who claims to have a red eyed black gecko has done this. Just some randoms thoughts for fun.

Ps. The melanistic gecko on Ron Tremper's book quite looked like a dark baby Super Snow, didn't it?

What I suspect is the guy saw somewhere that Kelli wants to produce a Black gecko with red eyes, which she wanted to call the Diablo (this was before RT announced his Diablo Blancos)... So the guy just wants attention...

EDIT: Brandon, want to trade a pair of your Royal Blues for a pair of my Special Darks?

I was thinking this one time, at band camp, this guy saw a picture of a cave gecko and let his imagination run wild :p

That leo has spots. He said an ALL black as in NO spots or other colors :main_rolleyes:
Well, you could line-bred the velvets so the background color was so black that the spots weren't noticiable, or with so many spots that they covered the whole gecko looking like if they were the background color :p

I have a cold, anyone wanna trade?

No thanks, you can keep your cold :p

Does the breeder who owns that black gecko (the real one, not the red eyed) have any plans on breeding it to a super snow? Crossing that one with a mack then making super snows with those babies could produce some super snows with solid eyes and a black body. Then breeding that with a bell enigma and making super snow bell enigmas might produce some black geckos with solid red eyes. Hopefully the super snow trait will keep the enigma trait from hypoing out the babies (because all the enigmas that ive seen are pretty hypo, and all the SS ive seen are not).

I dont think that crossing that black one with a bell enigma and making more bell enigmas from its offspring would work out to create a solid black gecko. It would make the red eyes and keep the body pigment black, but all the enigmas ive seen are pretty hypo... so im guessing that the enigma trait would clear off alot of the spots. Making a gecko that looks like a red eyed dalmatian IMO...

It could be anyone on that forum. It could be that he has a Cave gecko and doesn't even no what it is. they look similar ... well you and I know what a cave gecko and leopard gecko is, and what the differences are. but the average Joe might not know any better.
Okay either that or he's lying.

I guess she's busy enough trying to prove this trait to think even about outcrossing it with other morphs :p You can ask directly to her, that breeder is a member of this forum (Lottiz).

Neither do I. It would need tons of line-breeding/luck/both to get a black gecko this way. I don't think it will ever happen. Even if you include super snows in it (why would be it be darker if it was a SS, anyway?).

I think a black-spotted snow with red eyes would be very cool, though. The enigma cancelling the albinism in the body really opens many doors.

That is just my theory, because the enigmas that I have seen are always hypo. Ive never seen one with completely normal amounts of black spotting. The super snows have a large amount of darker spotting and alot of people believe that super snows will one day lead to a black morph. Since the super snow trait has been very good at blocking other pattern morphs so far (they all pretty much look the same more or less when in the super form) I would assume that the same would hold true if there was an enigma super snow.

I agree with Daniel about Super Snows eventually being used to make an all black leo. I'm kind of biased though because I'm hoping I'll hatch something similar this year. ;)
