Making a Rack- Finally

I might be making a rack 12 shelf high and 4 tubs wide soon. Im wondering what to make it out of. I dont know anywhere around here to get PVC so Im gonna use either Melamine or Wood. What is the best wood t omake it out of? Is there any down falls to using wood? I know Melamine is real heavy. ould wood be lighter? WHich is better to use? And how thick does it need to be? Thanks guys

if you feel like spending the money, get some cedar 1x12 or whatever size you need for your tubs. its real light and smells great. you can stain it or paint it if you worry about the smell of cedar. 3/4 inch thick should do the job

Cedar smells great. A little pricey but very nice. 3/4 inch plywood will work good.

I heard the smell could effect the animal? or is it just for snakes?

Personally I wouldn't use Cedar or Pine, but then again I`m not an expert in carpentry so don't quote me on this. But all my racks are made of 100% Melamine.

Any rack made out of wood, depending on the size (and you'rs sounds like a decent sized rack) is going to be heavy. Real cedar is pretty expensive, too. Try melamine. But, either way wood is heavy.

I was told to ask sign shops around your town. Usually they use the flat PVC or know where you can find some.

I don't know about in terms of a rack, but you shouldn't use cedar or pine inside an animal's enclosure, not because of the smell but because of the oils.

But isnt the PVC real expensive. Ill have it on those wheels (casters I think)

I don't know how expensive it is. I wouldn't figure too much if you can get a rack that holds 24 tubs (not included) with heat included on AP for $180 plus $45 shipping. You know they're making a profit, so you'd think the $180 has to be marked up from what they've spent.

Would I need to use 3/4" wood on the out sid to. or can I use 1/4" or somthing that isnt as thick?

I built a rack out of 1/2in pine plywood. It's not nearly as heavy as melamine and it's really nice, you can stain it to match your decor or whatever.

I couldnt have it shipped cause that would be too much. I dont have much money so I most likely will make it out of wood. Once I make more money I might try to get PVC. Unless you guys know a place in Florida that has PVC that isnt very expensive.
