Making a Tokay Gecko fat

2 weeks ago I picked up a Tokay Gecko from a pet store. After looking him over a bit he looked pretty good and strong and healthy. To make a long story short, I took him home and after getting adjusted to his new environment I noticed his eye was really swollen and the area around it turned white. I took him to the vet, did the whole fecal exam etc, and apparently he has worms and because of the adjustment period in his new home and not eating as much as he normally would, the worms moved to his eye in search of nutrition.

Anyways, he seems pretty strong and he's eating regularly now, but the vet says he needs to put on a bit of weight before she treats him for the worms. What I didn't ask the vet and my question to anyone here that is willing to help is: How much does a full grown male Tokay Gecko regularly eat and what is the best way to go about making him put on weight?

I'm currently keeping track of what he's eating and constantly trying to give him food (thankfully he's not a fussy eater). In the last 4 days he's eaten 8 Super Worms and 3 Pinkies. The Super Worms were dusted with Calcium and I fed the Pinkies liquid reptile multivitamins. However i'm not sure if this is a lot, the normal diet for an adult Tokay or what is the best way to get him some good nutrition and turn him into a real fatty :p

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance :)

i would not feed him so many pinkies. give him a larger variety of insect (crickets and roaches) in addition to the supers.

i dont have experience with tokays, but based on their size 2-3 supers per day (or the equivalent in weight with other insects) should be more than adequate.

Grab a pinkie by the tail or back legs with tweezers, wiggle it around in front of him untill he eats it, he may just lick it at first but keep trying, ... Then I would suggest dust mealworms ( more fattening then crickets) with calcium/vitimines and keep the bugger alternating between the two every second day. It takes a long time for them to digest pinkies, mine ate one Friday for the first time in her life (aprox 2.5 yrs old) and still hasn't pooed it out yet.
Hope this helps... and the crazy little bugger is alright

Mine eat 7-10+ supers a day. But he's not eating that much right now. Isn't it because he is molting? There are dead skins all over his home. What can u guys say about feeding a tokay with chicken liver?

It's important to provide a healthy varied diet, not fatty junk food like pinkies. Feeding superworms and roaches(especially dubia) are the best base diet you can give a tokay for improving body condition. Feed daily, 15-20 prey items for an adult animal. Unless the animal is treated for parasites he will have serious issues gaining weight.
