Hi! I am very new to owning leopard geckos and through my readings on the animals, I saw that several authors commented that females and males should only be kept together during breeding to avoid stress. Is this at all proven? Is it a good idea to house them seperate?

it can have it's advantages. They wouldn't fight over food, wouldn't breed unless you wanted them to. They might not get along that well due to personalities.

I always keep my males and females together, no matter what season.

My males do not mate all the time, if the females are always in there with them. When the season progresses, they will not mate at all. Now, if the females are taken out for a day or so, and I put one back in, he will mate right away.

Then I have my most active male, who I have to keep alone, or keep this one female away, because he would mate with her every 3 hours, or so, and she would have bites all over her. They are together now, since she seems like she is done laying (8 eggs), and he isn't taking an interest in her anymore.

It just depends on your males. Just watch them closely and observe their behavior. If you see your female with bite marks all over her (too many) and/or losing weight, get her away from the male.

But I do get more progress in mating, if they are seperated and then put together. Somehow makes the male excited.

We have our males and females seperate except for one pair. They are definnatly male female but they have never bred in the 2 years that we have had them. We bought them from a breeder that was going out of business and he had no idea how old they were so I assume that maybe they are too old to breed. The others we keep seperated so they don't breed all the time. Egg laying has to be hard on the girls. I wouldn't want to constantly be popping out kids, LOL!!!!

Thanks everybody! I'm going to watch them closely for now but am going to consider seperating them for a while just in case.
