Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum and to breeding leos. Have learned a lot on here already but i'm sure i'll be asking questions from time to time. There seems to be a lot of great experience here. Ok so first question. Let's say all males and females are caged seperately..how many females should a male be able to handle? Also, would this depend on the age/experience of the male? And do most breeders breed females more than once a season? Or just once at there first ovulation? Thanks and i appreciate everyone's help.

Well Chad, I am not a expert, but we keep 5:1 I don't think that it depends on age, but it does on weight. We wait till they all reach about 55g than we put them together. We have to big breeding cages and 4 groups, so we usually switch them out every 2 weeks so the females can be stress free and eat as much as they can. If they are gravid, we leave them alone and watch them closely to make sure all is good! we also check the girls when we feed at night for ovulation and if they are then we put them with the male and see if anything happens than we put them back.

I hope this helps you, like I said, I am not an expert, that is just what I do!

Here's my method: I put my leos in groups of 1.3 or 1.2 in Jan. and leave them together till October. Everyone seems to do OK. I could probably have more females for the males, but I'm limited in tank size (I don't use racks except for overflow babies) and I don't want to drown in hatchlings.
