... digs and hides in the dirt every morning and remains out of sight all day. I have heard that this is normal with females but not males. Is he okay?

Shouldn't be a problem.

I have a hide on the floor of my cage for my male and often he is in there. In the summer especially he has been known to wrap himself up in the leaves and hide.
