Mealies

Ok, so I have gone through quite a few dishes in the past couple of weeks trying to figure out how to get the mealworms to stay in the dish. Anyone has any suggestions? I have tile in all of my tanks and the mealworms crawl their way out of the dishes and hide underneath the tiles (small mealworms). Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I guess I should include this in this post as well, I have 3 females and one of them is not eating... the other 2 down 4-5 big mealworms (not supers) a day. And my male maybe takes 1-2 a day.... my third female though wont, she simply looks at the mealworm, and walks away as if to say "I cant believe your feeding me this crap". Thats the feeling I get when she walks away from it because the others jump all over the mealworm. Thanks for input on this also.

Have you tried other things besides mealworms? How about crickets? Or maybe roaches? Every leopard gecko is not going to steadily eat mealworms on a regular basis. Different folks, different strokes. :)

I have tried crickets but they are escaping somehow and I cant figure out how??? I think they crawl up the cord for the UTH and get out through a crack in the lid. I have been looking for someone who sells roaches in my area, no one as of yet.

A lot of people here have roaches...I bet if you posted in the classifieds you might find a local person...from what I understand, they seem to LOVE roaches...as far as the crickets, have you tried pulling the rear legs off? It slows them down QUITE a bit. They require some wonderfully pleasent things sometimes. :main_laugh:

My geckos find that crickets are too fast, and they seem to have the "Oh well, screw it, it ran away" attitude. You might need to make sure the gecko physically sees the food item wiggling....

I had been having the same problem...you need to get a dish that has a high enough lip to keep them from escaping, but low enough so that your gecko sees the worms...I just bought ALOT of these http://www.terrificpets.com/pet_supplies/reptile/bowls-feeders/dish/7176.asp everybody sees their food, and eats on their own.

I just about like, 4 of those dishes yesterday.
I got the really, really, small ones since it'll be just one gecko per dish.
I can also use them for calcium because they are so small.

I'm asking the same question as rhino43; why is the uth cord inside the tank? I use slate tiles on top of sand, with uth under the tank and my temps are in the 90's, sometimes high 90's. Anyway, I have a cheap ceramic ashtray and the mealworms cant get out of it. My leo doesn't like eating out of it though so I usually drop the mealworms one at a time on the tile in front of him and he's all over it. Now I have a homemade feeding area on the top section of my rock background and it works pretty well. good luck.

I use a glass ashtray, and when its feeding time I put the mealies on top of the container I keep them in, make sure he sees it, and then I slowly dump them in the ashtray.

I Use and Sell Small, Disposable Ecsape Proof Feeder Bolws/water Dishes for $0.35ea. These work Great for mealworms, Supers and small roaches. They also make great spill proof Water bowls as well, they are spill resistant. The bowls Dimensions are 3.5"x 3/4"

They also come in Large size if you have bigger Lizard than Leos or for larger Feeders Like Med Size and Bigger roaches. For around $0.50 ea they are 5"x1-1/4". These to also make great spill resistant water dishes.

Ummm, the UTH cord is underneath the tile.... so, in between the glass of the aquarium and the tile. Is this incorrect??? I have always done it this way and my temps are right around 90, so I couldnt imagine putting it underneath the glass??? Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

I built an area in my rock background for feeding that the mealworms can't climb out of but the ashtray I have works also.
