Mealworm Beetles

So I have about a dozen beetles from my first mealworm colony in a seperate container with some carrots and wheat germ bedding. My question is that some of them keep going upside down and stop moving. When I put them right side up they move around and climb on the carrots without any issue.

Should I be worried about them flipping upside down?

I'd like to know where my question is addressed in this video. I am perfectly capable of watching these videos on YouTube and did long before I decided to set up a colony. I'm am curious if anyone else has experienced this before. His beetles seems to run around and do stuff while mine don't move all that much and have a tendency to be on their back.

I really don't understand why you would post this as an answer to a pretty direct question about other people experiences. If I have nothing to worry about then just say so, posting a how to video is a waste of your time and mine.

If your beetles don't move much, could your temps be too low? Maybe too high?

I'm not sure about them being on their backs. It could be related to why they are sluggish. Maybe they got disoriented and didn't have the energy to flip back over.

I just started a colony of mealy worms and my beetles are doing the same thing. I think they have a hard time walking on the bran flakes and flip over. I am not worried.

I am warning you now to watch your tone with fellow forum members... A person went out of their way to post a vid for you to help you out... You could be a little nicer about it...
Thanks...

Out of his way? It took about 4 seconds to post the video, lets not go overboard. Watch my tone? It is irritating to sign on and see someone post an 8 min video that does nothing to help. 4 seconds for him to post 8 min for me to watch and gain nothing, who's really put out here.

When I post an answer I make sure that I've addressed the info that someone is looking for. What is the point in making a post unless they intend to do the same.

Thanks to the others, I'm glad that I'm not the only one with the issue. The temps are around 70 degrees which I guess is a little on the low end. They have also not completely hardened in their shell, only a couple days old so I'm probably jumping the gun on being worried about it. I just don't want to have wasted the time in starting the colony only to find out something was wrong that I could have fixed.

Again, watch your tone, especially with a mod...

I found the video helpful! Without wanting to, I started my own mealworm colony and learned a few things from this video. Thanks!

Once again, if trying to help is posting a video that doesn't address my question then this forum is unnecessary for me. I also don't need someone with Internet muscles telling me how to address people. If you were face to face with someone and asked them for directions and they were wrong, you'd be a little upset about being taken out of your way. That is how I felt. When I answer someones question on here or in real life I respect them enough to address the issue they are having.

Tone is also completely subjecting in text form. I could be simply stating a fact or being sarcastic. I have seen other members of the forum throw insults back and forth for pages. Where were the mods then. I point out that a post was unhelpful to me and I get the strong arm? Was I irritated, yes, see the example above.

You can ban me if you like, but it would be pretty insane considering some of the things other long time members have gotten away with. Posting my opinion about another post should be allowed, I didn't call anyone any names, I didn't flip out, all I did was respond to the post asking why he would post that as an answer to my question and why he thought it would help me.

I have been here a short time but in that time I have always been respectful and as helpful as I could be. There is nothing wrong with the post that I made in response to his.

If any one of the mods wanted you banned, one of us would have just given you infractions... Instead I gave you a warning to watch your tone when addressing other members without giving you a infraction or formal warning...

We do not want to ban people, we just want to keep this a family friendly website for people of all ages...

On the contrary I think the video answered all your questions!

1. If you looked closely you would notice that some of the beetles in the bin were on their back and some not, some were dead some not, some were running around some not, but its all normal for them to do this!

2. Another point I was hoping you would have picked up on is you dont need to seperate the beetles from the worms you only need to do that with Superworms, Meal worms and pupae and beetles all live together in the Oats and just need carrots or potatos for a water source!

The only time I seperate the worms is when I gut load with Pro Gecko gut load,I put my meal worms in a different bowl for 24-48 hrs before feeding!

Sorry you missed all the good info! :main_thumbsup:

My beetles are often on their backs. Depending on if I'm in a nice mood ;) I'll flip them over. But I figure eventually another beetle will come by and the flipped over one can use it to right itself. I've had them morph from an alien to beetle and they've been stuck for a day or two upsidedown before I can get to them.
You could lay a sheet of paper towel over the top which they could use to latch onto. HTH!
