Mealworm Size?

lol....I live in northeast Ohio, so I empathize with you.
I look forward to moving to Australia. :D
I use a low wattage night glo bulb above slate tile (to heat them up) for belly heat. There is more than one way to provide belly heat. As long as your surface temps are right, there is no problem with it.
I relied on that before I started feeding mealworms (occasionally I'd find my leo 'basking,' if you will, on a warm spot or climbing up onto her rock after the light had been turned off), but I figured with the extra chitin from the mealworms, I'd rather be safe than sorry and have started using the UTH at night.

Canada here...where it is freakin' cold today so I can definitely empathize...I, too, use a basking bulb with most of my reptiles along with UTHs. ;) One of the pitfalls I find with winter is that you either have to crank the furnace to warm your house (subsequently making the temps unfavorable for the colder-temp reptiles) or leave it on the cool side, making it unfavorable for the desert-type herps. As it is, I have my home thermostat set to 72F, and compensate for the lack of heat by throwing basking lights on my Leos' and AFT's tanks. It works great during the day for keeping them in the proper temp gradient, and then I just rely on the UTH at night.

I've been feeding my (adult) Leos kingworms instead of mealworms. While I know there's some debate as to how healthy they are, I do know they are much meatier than mealies, and the Leos also eat a lot less of them than they do mealies (due to their size/content) so I reason that they're ingesting a lot less chitin this way. I also keep upwards of 400+ on hand at all times, so I try and feed them the fresh-moults first. Both of my geckos are very good with basking though, and will immediately flop down on their basking spots right after a meal.

I didn't mean it's impossible to keep a leo without an UTH, I think they are better because it allows them access to belly heat all the time and can still hide. My personal opinion

We probably have the same weather really. What part of PA do you live in?

I leave the low wattage night glo bulb on 24/7, so he always has his belly heat from the warmed up tiles.

Northcentral. I'm about half an hour from the NY border. I had been using a CHE to keep it warm at night, but she'd started not leaving the coolest corner of the tank, so I let the temps drop a little, and now she's back to her normal places.

I'm very close to the OH/PA border as well.

I also have family in Merrittstown. I don't know if you know the area though.

I just use as I said the low wattage black night glo bulb above the tiles. No other heat bulbs or UTH. But I have a dedicated reptile room. It is a very tiny room, only about 9 ft. x 10 ft. With the heat in the house running and the reptile heat lamps, it stays very toasty in there with the door closed! I've been able to use less heat on each enclosure and get proper temps still. Less heat than last year I mean, when I didn't have a dedicated reptile room and they were in the living room, etc.

Nah, can't say I'm familiar with the name.

All my herps are in my room. We have one spare room in the back upstairs, but we don't have any heating upstairs, so that room's always freezing. My room stays the warmest because it gets sun most of the day.

I have no idea...I don't know the area well. I do know that Merrittstown is Fayette County though.

I think Hamburg shouldn't be far though. Isn't there a reptile show there?
Mapquest says it's about 30 minutes. There's gonna be a reptile show there Saturday. I'm driving 3 1/2 hours to go visit family in Bethlehem, then going another half hour or so to Hamburg on Saturday. First reptile show. :D

You'll have a great time! I don't get to go that often. I have to rely on my husband to get me there because I'm an idiot and don't drive on freeways....lol. He works seven days a week so getting to a reptile show is difficult.

I wish I had someone to go with though. Kinda nervous to go to a big reptile show for the first time by myself. But I'm a wuss. XD
