When they use up the gutload they produce droppings which look like a fine powder so sometimes you can end up with a lot of droppings and little food. The best time to change is when the gutload looks like it's mostly droppings. If you're buying worms and putting them in gutload, just wait till you're nearly out and then transfer the remaining ones to new gutload and throw away the old stuff. If you're breeding worms it's harder because the small ones are hard to sift out. I sift gently into a container and try to push the stuff that doesn't have worms in it to one side. Then I throw out the used up stuff. I hope that helps.

Time, Money, Worms, good supply

Your Question: can I keep adding to the supply? I'm assuming you wish to raise them, not just keep a supply as you buy them.
If you want to keep from losing what you are attempting to raise.......Yes. Add your mix when you see it has gotten quite dark. Its been used up for food value at that point. But...if you toss it, you throw away some eggs, small worms, etc. ..(after you have started getting beetles).....Add to the top layer another 1/2 in. of mix, some carrots, some oranges...but mostly orange skins.......Now I don't figure much cost for oranges. Because that is one of my "Main Courses" after a meal. But I NEVER eat the skins. My meal worms do. I keep pushing my mix...... because I see the results after using other ingredients......Guess I'll list it again and show a couple photos......since "a picture is worth a 1000 words."
Farm Store....Hen Layer Crumbles, Carrots, Oranges but mainly skins.*********I never separate the life forms, harvest by picking up
orange skins and collecting...or put in an egg carton. The worms will gather in the egg pockets overnight. Note that they also eat the paper product so I stopped gathering them by this method........a couple photos or 2,000 words. take care. / HJ
