Loose substrate is not acceptable in my opinion for Leopard geckos even if the pet store has "Has EVERY SINGLE reptile on millet seeds and inisist it is safe, cheap and easy to clean." With loose substrate there is a possibility of impaction and millet seeds are not even close to being in their natural habitat.

I personally don't see how loose substrate whether it be sand, millet seeds, etc. are cheap and easy to clean. The poop can be kicked around, buried under the substrate and the substrate can even absorb some of the liquid that comes out with the poop. To me that is unsanitary unless your cleaning that tank out on a constant bases. I don't see how it is cheap because you constantly have to buy it each time you do a complete cleaning.

In my own option my most natural, cleanest and looks nice is slate/ceramic tile. After the initial cost if pays for itself because it won't have to be replaced unless it breaks, it good with heat and just looks nice atleast in my eyes.

After that I pick paper towels even though you have to constantly buy them they are easily disposable and quickly replaced. Its sanitary if you change it regularly and safe.

Just my thought on Substrates in General.. So I went a little above and beyond your question.

Funny story about millet:
Some acquaintances of mine have a pair of leopard geckos which they keep on millet, despite my suggestions to change substrate (maybe they have by now). Since they got the geckos from a reptile rescue, the female has laid 2 pairs of eggs which I have agreed to incubate for them. The first pair was laid on millet, and even though I was pretty sure they were too shriveled to be alive, I agreed to incubate. A few days later I went to check on the eggs and saw some strange stuff in the container. The millet that was sticking to them was sprouting!

(Epilogue: they got a lay box, got another pair of eggs and these both hatched abouta month ago).
