Moist hide smells horrible

I use a tupperware container with spagnum moss and a hole cut in the lid for the moist hide in my babies tank.

As i was feeding them tonight, and spraying the moss to keep it moist, i noticed something really smelt whiffy.

I cleaned all the poop out and took the moist hide out and had a smell and it seemed fine. Have just started using repti carpet so was worried it was that.

I smelled the side of the hide and it smells horrible. Its not smelly inside and i know moss can kinda smell like a swamp when its wet, but this smells almost like rotten eggs.

I cleaned the sides with Bea Clean reptile disinfectant and it still stinks.

There was a little bit of poop on the outside of the hide but i cleaned it all off and the smell doesnt seem like poop smell.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be? The babies are only about a month or so old so im pretty sure there cant be any eggs hiding in the moss.

Im suspecting now one of the babies is male but can males make a marking smell?

I put fresh moss in on Friday :( Have had moss in moist hides since Feb and never noticed this icky smell before.

It seems to be more from the container than the moss :main_huh:

I just threw out the moss, soaked it for about 5 minutes in hot water and cleaner, dried it, put new moss in, moistened it...and the hide still smells like rotten egg fart :(

My other hides are fine....tis a mystery :huh2:

Time to toss the container! :main_yes:

I had a funny smell in my male's tank the other day. I ripped the whole tank apart and changed everything. Odd smell... the only thing I could think to be is the male's musky smell. Gross! But it did go away.

Sounds like a different smell than yours. Can you try to soak the tupperware in a mild bleach solution?

I didn't think humans could smell the excretions from a male leo, but perhaps it's the container itself that just stinks. I've noticed that when I store certain foods in plastic containers - especially if it's gone bad - it doesn't seem to matter how many times you've washed it, it'll still smell like whatever was in it. I'd suggest getting a new container. :)
