Moist Hide Substrate

I have a moist hide on the way in the snail mail and I was wondering what you all use for the substrate. What holds moisture best? I've heard some people use papertowels, cloth, vermiculite, moss ect.ect.

Where do I get vermiculite and moss? Does it come in a huge package? How often do I need to change the substrate.. once a week when I clean the cage? How often do I mist the hide?

It seems most recommend paper towels. They are easy to clean & don't cost much.

Garden centers for the vermiculite & moss. Again the recommendation goes against using moss or sand for substrate because they might ingest it.

I like coconut fiber because it seems to hold moisture nicely (better than moss).

Yes coconut fiber would be my suggestion too. or vermiculite. Some garden stores in my area stoped caring vermicultie I don't know why , so coconut fiber might be more redaly available for some. The only place I can Fined vermiculite now is East Bay Vivarium my somewhat locale reptile store.

It also depends on what you plan on using it for. If it is going to double up as a lay-box (if you are breeding), then paper towels would not be sufficient, because they like to dig when they lay.

I use paper towels for hatchlings, and bed a beast for anyone over 30 grams.

try....

Lucky Reptile Sphagnum Moss ....quote 'comes from controlled cultivation and is from highest quality.
It is shipped dried and pressed to a brick which allows for long-term storage.

If water is added this moss brick will swell up to about 5 litres of fresh and moist sphagnum moss. This moss is excellent for providing humid places inside the terrarium (e.g. hiding boxes for snakes) and it increases the overall humidity inside the terrarium.'

great stuff...:main_thumbsup:
