"Mold on an egg" question...

I use SIM containers to incubate my eggs. My question is this... If one egg has mold on it, should it be removed from the rest of the eggs that are also in there, and put in it's own container, or will it not spread to the other eggs? The egg I am speaking of that has mold on it was laid on 4/27. It's only been about 23 days or so, incubating at 90 degrees. It has had mold on it for about a week now (it's clutchmate does not have any mold on it's egg). I have candled it, and it still looks good, so I don't know what to do. I know that if i leave it be, with mold still on the top, for another 20 days or so till it is supposed to hatch, the mold will surely kill it by then.

Can the mold be wiped off with a wet paper towel maybe? If i leave it, and hope for the best, will the mold spread to surrounding eggs, or will it stay centralized on just that one egg? What should I do?

Thanks!

Hey Chris...
From my personal experience a moldy egg usually means a dead egg or a very week embryo...

In most cases, mold will not form on good, strong, healthy eggs even if there is a moldy egg sitting right next to one...

My guess is that the embryo most likely died already... I would separate it from the rest of your eggs... It is up to you if you want to clean it off and continue incubating it or just chuck it out... Personaly, I just dump them if they look like that...

You can also wait one more week. I heard that when you are using a SIM container they hatched sooner than you expect 5-7 days before expected. So the egg have been incubating for 22 days now meaning that one more week and it will like incubating for 5 weeks instead of 4. Is up to you.

Thanks, Gregg! I think I will attempt to wipe it off very carefully, and then isolate it from the others and put it in its own cup, and see what happens...

I can deffinately back that up about the SIM getting eggs to hatch sooner, because my 1st clutch I ever used in a SIM hatched 6 days earlier than other eggs from a different female that were laid on the same day (I put her eggs in a deli cup).

...And like I said, these are also in the male incubator set at 90 degrees, so that will also speed things up a little aswell.

We'll see what happens, and hope for the best!

I have an egg that is starting to turn a yellow color and grow a little mold. I have them incubating in vermiculite and have candled it and don't see anyting and it's been about 3 weeks. Any suggestions?

a little foot powder will kill mold.
i've used hydrogen peroxide dabbed on with a q-tip to stop the progress of mold.

i had a clutch stuck together, one good egg, one bad egg. the good one hatched normally even though it was fully adhered to the bad egg.

good luck!
