Moldy Crickets

I've had a really hard time keeping crickets alive and nothing seems to work. I've been using dog food and fish flakes along with some veggies to feed them, but for water I've had a water pillow. I found that the carrots dried out too quickly and didn't seem to work and I just had better luck with water pillows. But today I went to clean out the container and they were all dead and there was mold in with them. Has anyone else had problems with mold and crickets? How did you solve the problem?

Sounds like the humidity is too high. What are you keeping them in?
Thats what I was thinking too so I took the water pillow out. I only have one gecko and they die so quickly so I only get a dozen at a time. Because I only get a few I have them in a small sterlite tub.

Your best bet if you only get a few at a time would be a Kritter Keeper. They have enough airflow you should be OK. With a sterlite the only way to give them air flow would be to drill holes in it. While this would lower the humidity, it would give the crickets a way out.

There are holes punched in the top.

Is it alot of holes or just a few, because they really need alot of air flow. Those little bugs seem to create enough humidity to kill them selfs really fast. I used to keep mine out in a shed in an an Armstrong cricket bin but with the weather here even that kept in too much humidity. Another thing you could try is putting screen on the top. Just get a piece of screen made for windows, cut a square out of it. Cut a hole in the lid and hot glue the screen over the hole.

I would suggest cutting a nice size hole/square on the top and putting some wire mesh. I had a humidity issue with my roaches and I had around 100 holes on the lid and it wasn't working cut out a square and put some mesh and i've been good so far.

Between two terrariums
Mine are in a leftover terrarium (it's held together with strapping tape on one side, so I'm not using it for any pets ;) ), and everything dries out ... well, a little too fast. :tongue3:

Though potatoes do mold in there if I forget about them.

I keep my crickets in taller bins, with no lids, for maximum ventilation.
