In college, I took a genetics class and had to write a few papers. I based all of mine on leopard geckos. I learned a lot but when it came down to needing to site peer-reviewed articles on specifically leos, I was out of luck. The closest articles I could find were just on the albino strains of other lizards. I've asked myself the same questions though. My guess to where the first mutations came from is probably an inbred set of leo's, which would damage the DNA enough to allow mutations to start going crazy and then adding in the other sub-species. Just a thought though. As to how everything else came about is something I hope we all have the answer to one day :)
