Moss? - Is this safe?

I ordered a big bag of this stuff trying to save a few bucks. There are no additives. I've read every last inch of the bag at least 20x. However, when I opened it, I found the granules(sp) were really tiny. Pretty simular to Eco Earth's consistency maybe a hint finer. I've been using Fluker's moss or paper towels, never anything this grainy. Do you think this would be safe for their humid hides? Here's a link and a pic.

I don't know if it would be okay to post the package so I won't for now. If it'd help I'd be happy to post it later. Any help would be wonderful. Thank you.

Well the website is where I have ordered my Perlite and Vermiculite from... hmmm.. that stuff really does look like coco fiber.. I would think that it would work very well, I would just try to get out some of those big pieces that I can see in the pic (I do that with coco fiber ;) )

It says on the website it's sphagnum peat moss, yes? Sphagnum peat moss is perfectly safe, if not better than coco fiber :main_yes: I am glad you brought this up, I may order some myself! Let me know how it works out for you, please ;)

Thanks!

It is peat moss. I get my perlite from them as well, figured since I was already paying shipping, why not try it.

I might give it a whirl in a couple of days. Be sure to let you know how it goes.

Hoping some one might have used this or something simular.

This is my Spaggnum Peat Moss that I use in my lay boxes.........Looks close to yours...maybe a little darker. Take out the large twigs, junks, wet it good under the faucet and then keep it sprayed on a regular basis. Don't let it get dried out as our photos look......if you have more than one female together they sometimes kick it up and it can get in an eye.Take care. HJ

Woops......Humid Hides?? Lay Boxes??

Went back and read where you say Humid hides. Are you needing them for females to lay eggs in? If not.....I suggest staying with paper towels. ....$120 with the vet is why. I only use it where eggs will be, at the time eggs are to be laid. Otherwise White Paper towels.Take care. HJ

Thanks H.J. It was just going to be used for humid hides/layboxes. I'll definitely "de-junk" it before using any. Did you have any issues with dust from this small of particle?

OOH!! Sorry to hear about the vet visit ( I'm sure that wasn't fun. Was it impaction?

Vet Bill / eye infections

Not really dust once its wet good and kept moist. But the vet doctored two for eye infection. I was keeping 3 females in a 55 gal. that were going to be laying eggs. Not positive, but pretty sure, it was from the moss in the lay box that got in the eyes and started it all....Now each is separated and on paper towels except for laying season. Then I switch to the moss. All males and other females are paper towels all the time....... Take care. / HJ

Thanks H.J. - I never would have thought of eye problems... Respiratory problems and Impactions would have been my first concerns.

I think I might stick to Eco Earth for now, look at one of the long fiber types down the road.
