Well, my mom said before I can breed mealies, she wants to know about it. This is the conversation that went on:

"Mom, I was talking to someone on GF.net, and they said if I want to breed mealies, I probably should get 50 more, because 100 isn't enough. Some people have pulled it off with 100, but it would be better to have 150-200."

"Why do you need to breed mealies?"

"Because its cheaper! Would you rather me spend $3.00 every couple of weeks, or breed my own so I don't have to buy them anymore?"

"And HOW do you breed mealies?"

First, you get the mealies, put them in a container, and feed them. After a while they turn into pupae then into beetles. Then you put the beetles into another container with the same bedding and stuff, and wait for then to lay eggs. When you see little baby mealies, take the baby mealies and throw them in with the other mealies so they can grow. There, thats all there is to it."

"Emily, I still am uncertain about the beetles. I don't think I want beetles in my house."

*rolls eyes* "Mom, the beetles can't fly!"

"Before you do ANYTHING I want to read up on it."

"But mom!"

"I want to read about it and see what you have to do."

*Huff* *rolls eyes again* "Fine............"

Sooooooooooo, anyoneup to helping me convince my mom to let me breed the mealies? Any helpful info, maybe restating and rewording what I said? :p Anything to help me convince my mom. Also, put somewhere that they DON'T STINK. Maybe that will help :p.

Thanks!
Emily

She seems to be reasonable...

look at it from a sales perspective...

The features and benefits!

No smell!- Mealies do not give off an odor! And dropping an orange peel in with em' actually is quite refreshing!

No mess!-requires limited space, nothing to clean up

No escapees!--cant fly or climb up slick surfaces!

Free, sustainable food for your geckos...Show her you are being productive and fiscally responsible!

Cheap bedding...seriously...oatmeal and some wheat bran.

Healthy monitored nutrition for both mealie and your geckos!--you know what they are eating.

No frequent trips to buy mealies...GAS PRICES!!!

Responsibility...-you are overseeing a biological phenomenon

Education!--you are learning about insects, herps, and this is something you can pass on to your children one day.

LOL-does she have any idea that you already have beetles with just having the meal worms?

Ummm...........I would just tell her that there is no difference with what is in the house now-just the cost will be cheaper

You could try switching to superworms.........I'm sorry but I can't remember if you were one of the people that has Leos that won't eat Supers

I like using Supers and crickets and roaches much better than messing with meal worms
But we won't even go into keeping roaches with your Mom-LOL
:main_rolleyes:

Good Luck

Tell your mom that my 5 & 7 year old boys have mealies in their room in a butter tub (ready to eat mealies) & a foil pan (too small mealies) & a tupper ware container (beetles). They feed them carrot shavings which disappear before bedtime--no mold, no smell--and potoato slices. We are only feeding 4 leos so our "farm" can stay quite small.

No lids. No smells. No trips to 5 different pet stores in search of overpriced food.

When all else fails, bring your science teacher in on it. They love the whole circle of life thing. Extra credit maybe?

I have a feeling she doesn't know that the mealies are beetles :main_laugh:.

Yeah, they won't eat supers (they're more spoiled than my BROTHER!)

Definately. She will FREAK if I even MENTION feeding roaches. Plus, I can't stand the dead ones. Even LIVE cockroaches creep me out. Mom has to take the dead stuff out of the tub(where they occasionally turn up).

She won't even TOUCH the super worms, nonetheless look at them. She does let them in her house for the skink though :D.

LOL my science teacher would LOVE that. She is one of those teachers with the motto, "Say, show, do." Wouldn't you love bringing worms, beetles, and pupae into a classful of 13-14yr olds? :main_laugh:

Everyone has some very great advice so I really don't have too much to add, except that NYworms.com has a great explanation of how to breed mealies, just so that your mom can read over it or whatever ;)

The explanation is at the bottom of the page:
http://nyworms.com/mealworms.htm

Good luck!! Although she really should give in, the pros far outweigh the cons :main_yes:
