Mouth rot... What causes it?

My hypo carrot tailed LG has had one case of mouth rot in the past 3-4 years of owning her. I can see a bit of it coming back again and last time I took her to my local and well loved pet store and they removed it from her mouth. A little blood came but it went away and relieved enough pressure that I'm sure it had eased her pain. Now I see it coming back again and I am curious why mouth rot even occurs; I also feel as tho if I find the route of the problem then I may be able to stop the issue altogether. Anything, josh? Or anyone else for that matter. I love my baby and only want the best for her ImageUploadedByTapatalk1398529762.362556.jpg

As far as I know, mouth rot can sometimes start from a small sore in the mouth that becomes infected. I would imaging that simply removing it will not cure the infection. I'd recommend a vet (as opposed to a pet store) visit to see what antibiotic may take care of the problem.

I have already had antiobiotics but if I'm not mistaken they were for an eye infection at the same time in which she had a little mouth rot going in the past. I did end up going to pet store just to ask their opinion and I had forgotten of their initial advice months ago to dab the front area of her mouth with listerine on a Qtip. I also asked them again what usually caused this and they said most likely from her hitting her mouth against things which causes mouth rot. Sure enough with two treatments of listerine, the second grabbed the piece of mouth rot and it was removed - this time without any pain to my baby; if only slight discomfort. She was a trooper as always; and from here on out I'm changing where she gets fed from so when she dives hard for her food she doesn't hit the stone inside her cage; rather just a plastic dish. Hopefully this will permanently solve my issue

Have you tried a bit of neosporin? That's a topical antibiotic that may help. Is there still an open sore? How is she looking today?
