The Spyker Jr's and our entire collection are moving up to Portland Oregon. We are planing to be moved up there by October, I've lived in San Fran for 20 years and this will be my first big move:sweatdrop: We are going to move up there to rent and scout out some land with Jessica's sister who already lives up there.:anxious: we figure the sooner the better especially since the whole family wonts to buy acreage in Oregon within the next couple years. We would have loved to stay in the Bay Area but it is just too expensive to get a bunch of land and be able to divide it in to lots for family to build homes on. it seems far away but time is moving so fast we have already started packing (the non essentials ie. extra dishes some books. stuff we don't use on a regular basis). We have quit the task ahead of us moving our zoo up there.

We have the whole herp part of the move planed out pretty much and we are building crates for most of our terrariums.
:help:
Any suggestions or helpful hints for a smooth operation from anyone that has moved a large herp collection a considerable distance would be greatly appreciated.

And any of you Oregonians on here if you have any thoughts , ideas, suggestions, or impute on Oregon. decent areas to live, herp friendly places ie good reptile stores, in the Portland area. that would be greatly appreciated as well.

We will miss all a yall around these parts:sad3: and hope to see most of you before we leave:2thumbsup: .
THX Zach & Jess Spyker.

Woohoo! More reptile people heading to Portland!

First off, southwest Portland is the best area of Portland to live in. I've lived in the four major areas of Portland, and nothing beats southwest. Southwest and the areas of "Garden Home" and "Multnomah Village" are amazing places. The houses in these areas are older, but make up for that with huge lots and friendly communities.

House of Reptiles in Tigard (which is a five minute drive from some areas of southwest Portland) is an amazing all reptile specialty store. The people who run it are fabulous, and you can find plenty of interesting reptiles in the store. Even Zeke (their tortoise) can be found wandering about the store on slower days.

There are also plenty of areas outside of Portland that have tons of land:

Albany
Corvallis
Scio
Stayton

Basically any small town out past Salem has plenty of land. ;)

Thank you very much for all the info Hannah. How is the show seen up there?

Only two major shows in the area. PDX Metro Reptile Expo at Wilsonville, and then the WCCB Reptile Expo at the Portland convention center.

It's sort of a bummer. :(

I don't have any advice for you, but I am a person that spent several summers in Oregon growing up and it is a VERY beautiful state!! My dream is to one day live there, I really hope that you enjoy it :)

Good luck with everything!

Almost had to move and I do not envy moving a lot of large glass cages hundreds of miles.

The great thing is Jessica's dad is building each one its own custom shipping crate made out of recycled shipping pallets. w/ some padding on the inside and a tight fit I think they should be good to go.

ive been to portland a lot as my grandmother lives there. its a nice area. but then the whole state that ive seen is beautiful. multnomah falls is a great place, weve walked the trail to the top of the waterfall and traveled a ways up the river. i dont think ive ever had so much fun as i did getting out on the rocks in the middle of the river and jumping rock to rock instead of taking the path :p oh the joys of being a kid... im sure youll like it there.

I have some experience with the logistics of moving a large collection. If you'd like some pointers, check your PM box.

No we are moving up in the very beginning of Oct.
We have been looking for houses to rent and are a little worried about finding one that will take all our animals.

But our family is also looking to by property up there and we may have just found the perfect place 25 acres and a big house. So we may be moving up there onto our land into our house without worry of an OK from a landlord. + it would be nice not to have to move the entire collection twice. and we could get that aussie puppy we were thinking of getting.:D :D We are REEEELLLYYY EXCITED!!!!
