Hi

My daughter purchased her second Leo yesterday. She currently has been keeping a female that is about 8 months old. She purchased a male that is between 2 and 3 years old. They are both housed seperately in their own enclosure across the room from each other. He has settled in just fine but the female is acting very unnerved now that the male has arrived. I assume it is pheramons or something of that nature. Will she calm back down? or was this a bad idea. We assumed since they were not going to be housed together or the tanks even close to each other they would be fine.....we don't want our little female constantly stressed out. Any suggestions?

Your male may be displaying for the female. This can be his way of saying do want to make baby geckos or a display of dominance. He will raise up off the ground and put his tail in the air and shake it back and forth. When any of my males do this and it is intimidating other geckos I just put a piece of cardboard in front of one of the tanks to block the view. Then I remove it a day or so later after he calms down. I do this as often as needed, seems to work well.

Thanks for your response. She hasn't said anything at all about the male displaying...just the female has been acting adjatated. They are across the room from each other. She has put up a piece of cardboard in hopes that if it were a visual thing she will calm down. We just didn't want her stressed out by him. Hopefully all settle in in a few days.

Another thing to try is be sure to wash hands between interacting with the 2. I've read of multiple people having issues after handling one and then working with another before washing especially during breeding season.

Hadn't thought of that. I will make sure she is mindful of that. The female doesn't really like to be handled so she doesn't really hold her but I will make sure she has washed before feeding etc.

The female may also be ovulating, which she would have done even without the presence of the male. Some females do act a little strange when they're ovulating.
