OK, so I have been getting everything ready for the arrival of my leo, tomorrow morning. Had everything all set up, and monitoring the temps. Looked great!! This morning, the expensive (err, well 40$$ anyway) thermostat I got from Big Apple Herps died!!! I checked the temp on the low end of my 20gal tank and discovered my (also expensive) rheostat also died!! :main_angry:
What a crappy way to start the day!!!
W/O a thermostat, the UTH will go up to 110 F. !!! So now I'm thinking I'll just stop off at PetStupid and get a cheap rheostat for the UTH instead of the thermostat and control the temp that way!

Stupid low quality crappy Zoo Med crap!!!! :main_angry:

Does anyone actualy prefer using a rheostat for their UTH??

I built one for pretty cheap. It works great and actually the temps dont really fluctuate much at all.

You made your own? Your smarter than I am, I would end up with my fingers soldered together! :D

lol ya. Its actually really easy to do. Im 13 and know pretty much nothing about wires and stuff but i got it down. It only takes about 15 mins and there is no soldering or anything. Just stripping wires and twisting them together and stuff. If you want a link to the site i learned from i can give it to you.

I use the zoo med rheostats on all my tanks. Works well so far. Maybe you should return those if you just got them they probably have a 30 day warranty if they are faulty.

I made one of the dimmer ones too and it works fine. I now use it with my thermostat as a backup.

Yep, I returned it, and got 2 cheap ones (ZooMed). But they dont work with the UTH I have attached to my tank. Works fine with my spare UTH, but that one is too small!! :main_angry: RATS!!!
I've been using halogen bulds. One is 25 and the other 50W, on a rheostat (at least THAT works!!). Last night I woke up and noticed the temps had dropped down to like 75F on the hot end. I dont know if that's bad or not. In the wild they burrow belowe ground where it gets quite cool. So I'm a little skepticle that they need 85/90F temps!?
Anybody have an opinion about that?? :main_huh:
